The water jacket of Copper mould assembly  (also known as crystallizer jacket or cooling water jacket) is the core component of continuous casting crystallizer. It is responsible for the rapid cooling of high temperature molten steel to form the initial blank shell and ensure the surface quality of the billet and the uniformity of the internal tissue. Its design directly affects the continuous casting efficiency, energy consumption and equipment life.

  1. Structure and function
assembly Functional and design requirements
Water cover body -Material: High thermal conductivity copper alloy (e. g. CuCrZr, CuAg)

-Structure: double or multi-layer flow channel (turbulent design to improve cooling efficiency)

Cooling water channel -Flow channel form: spiral, cellular, matrix

-Flow channel width: 3~8mm (avoid blockage and ensure flow rate)

Sealing system -Seal ring material: fluorine rubber (200℃) or metal winding pad

-Seal pressure: 1.5~3MPa (leakage prevention)

Temperature measuring / pressure measuring interface -Thermocouple: Monitoring the surface temperature of the water jacket (precision ± 2℃)

-Pressure sensor: real-time feedback water pressure (range 0~5MPa)

2. Core performance parameters

parameter Typical range Impact indicators
cooling water flow Single flow: 50~200m³ / h (adjusted according to section of casting) Cooling strength (blank shell thickness)
Water flow rate 6 ~ 12 m/s (Turbulent state, Reynolds number Re> 4000) Avoid local overheating due to the laminar flow
Water inlet temperature 25 to 35℃ (up to 40℃) Control of cooling temperature difference (Δ T 15℃)
Outlet temperature 50℃ (temperature rise control <15℃) Prevent vaporization and scaling
density of heat flow rate 1.5~3.0MW/m² Shell growth rate (1-3 mm/s)

3.  Adoption of materials

Material type characteristic applicable scene
Chromium-zirconium copper (CuCrZr) -Thermal conductivity of 320W / m · K

-High temperature strength (300℃ tensile 200MPa)

-corrosion preventive

High continuous casting (> 2m / min)
silver-bearing copper (CuAg) -Thermal conductivity of 380W / m · K

-Excellent wear resistance and high cost

High quality stainless steel / special steel continuous casting
Plated copper -Base copper + surface nickel (50~100 μ m thick)

-Prevent oxidation and prolong life

High-humidity / corrosive environment
Composite copper steel -Copper inner + stainless steel shell (vacuum diffusion welding)

-Both thermal conductivity and structural strength

Large-section slab continuous casting machine

  1. Suggested configuration:
scene Recommended configuration
High pull speed small billet continuous casting Chromium zirconium copper water sleeve + single spiral flow channel, water flow rate of 12 m/s, equipped with automatic back washing system
Large-section slab continuous casting Composite copper steel water jacket + multi-circuit partition cooling, wall thickness of 40mm, nickel plating treatment
High corrosion environment Nickel-plated copper water jacket + 316L stainless steel shell, regular citric acid cleaning (pH=2~3)
Budget limited projects Ordinary copper water set + mechanical reinforced seal, with offline chemical cleaning (cost reduction of 30%
